Apology Issued After Offensive Comment

A Liberal Democrat candidate in the upcoming general election has come under fire for making derogatory remarks about a fishing village in the northeast of England. Jemma Joy, who is standing for election in Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, referred to the village of Skinningrove as the "most in-bred" in Britain in a 2010 social media post. Joy initially dismissed the comment as sarcasm, but has now issued an apology, stating that she is "really sorry" for any offense caused.

Tory MP Demands Apology

Sir Simon Clarke, the Conservative MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, called for an apology from Joy after the offensive post came to light. He expressed shock at her comments and defended the character of the Skinningrove community, emphasizing their generosity and decency. Clarke also criticized the Liberal Democrats for preaching kindness while demonstrating disdain for those who hold different views.

Local Councillor Supports Joy's Apology

Barry Hunt, an independent councillor and long-time Skinningrove resident, commended Joy for apologizing and believed that the matter has been resolved. He described the incident as an attempt to discredit Joy for political purposes and referred to it as "dirty politics."

The Liberal Democrats and Jemma Joy have been contacted for comment.
