Around 200 bike thefts are going unsolved every day in the UK, according to shocking statistics. Over the past five years, a staggering 365,709 cases of bike thefts have gone unresolved, accounting for a whopping 89% of all reported incidents. Even more alarming is the fact that just 2% of these thefts resulted in a suspect being charged.

Lib Dems: Bike Theft Has Been "Effectively Decriminalised"

The Liberal Democrats, who compiled the analysis based on official figures, have raised concerns that bike theft has been "effectively decriminalised". Alistair Carmichael, Home Affairs spokesman for the party, expressed his shock at the high number of unsolved cases, stating that victims are left feeling out of pocket and distressed, with no justice served.

"Whether it’s used for commuting, family days out or exercise, people’s bikes are a hugely valued possession," Carmichael said. "So bike thefts leave victims feeling both out of pocket and distressed, and knowing the thief will probably get away with it just adds salt into the wound."

Policing Minister: The Lib Dems Cannot be Trusted

Responding to the claims, Policing Minister Chris Philp criticized the Liberal Democrats and their stance on crime. Philp accused the party of wanting to strip police officers of vital powers and voting against tougher sentences for serious offenders. He highlighted the Conservative Party's efforts in cutting theft offenses by 47% since 2010, including a 54% reduction in bicycle theft, as well as significant decreases in violent crime.

"The Conservatives have put a record number of police officers on our streets to keep our communities safe," Philp stated.

While the shocking number of unsolved bike thefts is cause for concern, it remains to be seen what actions will be taken to address the issue and provide justice for the victims.
