Opposition Leader Defends Rejection of Ceasefire

Sir Keir Starmer has stood by his decision to reject calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, despite growing dissent within the Labour Party. In a major speech, he argued that an immediate ceasefire would only allow Hamas to regroup and plan more terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. While acknowledging the need for a humanitarian pause to allow much-needed aid into Gaza, Sir Keir emphasized that a lasting solution cannot be achieved through violence.

Israel's Right to Self-Defense

Sir Keir insisted that Israel has the right to defend itself, but within the confines of international law. When pressed on whether Israel is adhering to these legal boundaries, he acknowledged that complex judgements need time to be made. The Labour leader emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring that Palestinians forced to flee their homes within Gaza can return quickly.

Labour Party Unity

Sir Keir's decision not to call for a ceasefire has led to dissent within the Labour Party, with senior figures publicly disagreeing with his stance. However, the opposition leader maintains that there is unity within the party in wanting to alleviate the dire situation in Gaza. He takes collective responsibility seriously but believes that the current circumstances do not warrant a ceasefire.

"There is unity in what we want to see, which is the alleviation of the awful situation in Gaza," Sir Keir said.

"It is for me to address collective responsibility, I recognize that. It matters, and I take that duty extremely seriously, but I put it in the context of understanding what is driving people in the call for a ceasefire, which is in my judgment not the call that we should be making as things stand for the reasons I have set out."
