BENEFIT fraudsters will be targeted in a major crackdown with fines issued as part of a major welfare overhaul, Rishi Sunak says.

Benefit Fraud Crackdown

The Prime Minister said anyone abusing taxpayers’ cash will be treated as sternly as those who commit tax fraud by giving new powers to investigators in the Welfare department.

New Powers and Penalties

New powers will mean searches, seizures, and arrests can take place and civil penalties can be handed out to more offenders. Third parties will now be able to provide information to analysts during fraud investigations.

AI Monitoring and Savings

The welfare overhaul is expected to save taxpayers ÂŁ600 million within four years and aims to stop people from "gaming the system" by utilizing Artificial Intelligence to monitor payments.

PM's Stance and Response

Mr. Sunak emphasized the importance of cracking down on benefit fraud, stating that it erodes support for the welfare state when individuals exploit taxpayer funds. The new fraud legislation will align the DWP with HMRC to treat benefit fraud like tax fraud.

Opposition's View

Sir Keir Starmer criticized the government's focus on benefit fraud, urging action to reduce NHS waiting lists and help people get back to work. He emphasized the need for practical solutions to address the challenges faced by the economy.
