VETERAN cops and prison officers will help decide whether to free violent criminals in a parole system shake-up.
Justice Secretary Dominic Raab wants more “operational people who understand risk in the real world” to have a say.
They occupy only five per cent of Parole Board seats, having been “squeezed out” by judges, psychologists and psychiatrists.
Mr Raab said: “I want a few more grizzled law enforcement police officers on those panels.
“The Parole Board’s overriding job is to protect the public and if we don’t change it, it won’t command public confidence.”
He spoke out after Parole Board decisions over high- profile convicts including Tracey Connelly, the mother of Baby P.

A panel decided to free Connelly — jailed in 2009 over the death of her 17-month-old son in Tottenham, North London.
Mr Raab, who failed in a bid to persuade a judge to overturn her release, added: “Tracey Connelly is a wicked and dangerous individual.”

Under planned reforms, Mr Raab will be able to intervene in cases involving murder, terrorism, rape and child abuse.
It means he could veto the release of up to 600 convicts every year.
