Opponents claim taxpayers foot the bill for unworked hours

A woke council in South Cambridgeshire is under fire for costing taxpayers £3.3 million a year by allowing staff to work a four-day week on full pay. Critics argue that this amount reflects the total bill for the hours that staff are paid but not at work. Heather Williams, leader of the Conservative opposition, expressed concern over the implications of the four-day week on residents, stating that it demonstrates "complete contempt" for the majority of South Cambridgeshire residents.

Services affected and taxpayers left to foot the bill

According to Tory Councillor Richard Williams, the reduced work week has negatively impacted services such as waste collection, resulting in additional costs for taxpayers. Williams called for the council to abandon the "ridiculous and expensive trial."

Experiment saves on agency fees but misses performance targets

The council, run by the Liberal Democrats, initiated the four-day week trial in January, citing the ability to fill staff vacancies and save £760,000 in agency fees. However, the government criticized the council for failing to meet performance targets and demanded an end to the trial. The council has been asked to comment on the issue.
