Queen hands OBEs to Henderson and Nicholls in New Year Honours list

THEY’RE used to going head to head for the top prizes in jumps racing.

But this time Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson will share the spoilsas they are both awarded OBEs in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

The pair have dominated the sport in recent years, Nicholls having claimed his 11th champion trainer crown from his old foe Henderson in April this year. Henderson himself has been champ five times.

It caps a remarkable week for Nicholls, 57, who celebrated an 11th King George win with Clan Des Obeaux on Thursday.

He said: “It’s a great achievement and I’m really honoured and proud.

“It’s a credit to everyone as I couldn’t do it withoutall the brilliant owners and staff we have.”

The 69-year-old Henderson, who has trained 56 winners for the Queen during his 40-year career, added: “It is a huge honour.

“I love the game, the game has been very good to us. It’s very nice we have been recognised in this way.

“It certainly doesn’t mean I’m retiring either!”

Owner Graham Wylie, who has counted Inglis Drever and Yorkhill among his big winners, has been awarded a knighthood for services to business and charity.
