ROYLE Family star Peter Martin has died aged 82.

The beloved actor played the Royle’s neighbour Joe Caroll for 14 years.

Peter then went on to star in Emmerdale between 2001 and 2007.

The star also featured in Coronation Street and Chucklevision. 

He first became known in the 1980s for his appearances in TV ads for the Jewson hardware chain.

Today friends and family paid tribute to the great actor.

One pal wrote: “My friend, drinking partner, fishing buddy passed away on Wednesday morning.

“Very sad, many of you will know him from TV.

“RIP Peter Martin, we had some great laughs.”

Another added: “Such a gentleman and kind soul.

“Rest in Peace, Pete, you will be missed greatly.”
