Shirley Ballas Reflects on Being Judged Over Her Body

Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas recently revealed the bodyshaming she experienced after returning to the dance floor just six weeks after giving birth. In an interview on the Radio Times podcast, Ballas shared that she was cruelly shamed for her stretchmarks in 1986, but noted that such criticism would not be tolerated today. She reflected on the experience, saying, "I just accepted it, moved on, and did what I needed to do – for me, it was character building."

Times Have Changed, According to Shirley

Shirley Ballas, now 63, also discussed how the entertainment industry has evolved since her early days as a dancer. She noted that today, people are more cautious about how they communicate and provide feedback. Ballas expressed that she went back to dancing shortly after having her baby and was told that she was marked down due to her "revolting" stretchmarks. However, she did not allow the criticism to affect her confidence and has since become one of the most glamorous women on TV as the head judge of Strictly Come Dancing.

Life and Balance

Ballas also shared how she has achieved more balance in her life after struggling to "switch off" for years. She emphasized the importance of listening to her body and taking time to rest when needed. Additionally, Ballas mentioned that she surrounds herself with uplifting people, including her mother, personal assistant, driver, and her son, who are all positive influences in her life.

Relationship and Family

Shirley Ballas has been in a relationship with Danny Taylor for five years. While they had previously planned to get engaged, they decided to focus on their families instead. Ballas shares a home with her 84-year-old mother, who is in remission from colon cancer. Her son, Mark, and his wife recently announced that they are expecting their first child in June. Ballas expressed that marriage is not a necessity at this point in her life and that she and Taylor are happy with their current situation.
