Mario fans around the world are abuzz with excitement following the news of a major shake-up in the beloved franchise. The iconic plumber's long-time voice actor, Charles Martinet, is stepping down from his role, leaving fans curious about what this means for the upcoming game Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

A farewell to the voice of Mario

On August 21, Nintendo announced that Charles Martinet, who has been the voice of Mario for over three decades, will be moving on to a new role as Mario Ambassador. Although he will continue to represent the beloved game series, Martinet will no longer be voicing the characters in the games.

This shocking reveal comes just before Gamescom 2023, Europe's largest video game convention, where Nintendo is expected to showcase upcoming Mario games.

Audible differences in upcoming game

Eagle-eared Mario fans have already noticed slight differences in the plumber's voice in the trailers for Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Nintendo has now confirmed that the game will feature new voice talent for the roles of Mario and Luigi, as Martinet will not be reprising his iconic characters.

New voices, new adventures

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to be released on October 20, 2023, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch console. Alongside this, Nintendo also revealed that WarioWare: Move It! will introduce a new voice actor for Mario's rival, Wario. The game was announced at the June 2023 Nintendo Direct and is due to be released on November 3, 2023.

Martinet's legacy

Mario fans will undoubtedly feel nostalgic as they bid farewell to Charles Martinet, who has been the official voice of Mario since 1991. His portrayal of the beloved character in Super Mario 64, released in 1996, made him a household name for gamers worldwide. While there have been portrayals by other actors in movies and TV shows, this voice change marks a significant milestone in the long-running Mario series.

Nintendo has promised a video message from Martinet himself, as well as Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, which will be released soon. Until then, fans eagerly anticipate the new voices that will bring Mario and his friends to life in future adventures.
