Sharing and Selling Games: A Perk of Physical Copies

One of the advantages of purchasing physical games is the ability to share and sell them. After completing a game, players can sell it back to stores, recoup some of their money, and purchase another new game. Additionally, they can share or swap game discs with friends, expanding their gaming options.

A Shocking Discovery: PlayStation's 'No Resell' Policy

A recent message circulating on social media has left PlayStation fans furious. The message stems from PlayStation's Terms of Service, which states, "You must not resell either disc-based games or digital games unless expressly authorized by us. And, if the publisher is another company, additionally by the publisher."

An Established Policy, Not a New Addition

While some fans believed this to be a new addition to the Terms of Service, it has actually long been the policy and is also present in the terms of service of other gaming companies like Xbox and Nintendo. Pictures of older game copies, such as Final Fantasy, have surfaced online, showing the same language on the back of the box.

Understanding the 'No Resell' Policy

The wording of the terms may lead to confusion, as it seems to apply to everyone. However, the policy primarily targets specific authorizations. Individuals are authorized to resell their games and share them with friends. The policy is aimed at companies that buy games in bulk for resale or rental purposes, which requires a special license. It also targets scalpers who purchase rare games and hardware in large quantities to drive up prices on platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace.

Clarity from Sony's Senior Executive

Shuhei Yoshida, a senior executive at Sony, took to Twitter to address the concerns. He clarified, "If you are concerned about our new European TOS, we confirm that you are able to sell or share your disc PS4 products, including in the EU."
