THOSE who own Persona 5 Royal on PlayStation 4 will not be eligible for a free or discounted version of the game when it releases on PlayStation 5.

Atlus recently announced that its award-winning game Persona 5 Royal will be available this year on multiple platforms.

The game is an upgraded version of Persona 5 which was originally released simultaneously for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in 2016.

The Royal version was released exclusively for PlayStation 4 owners in 2020, and features a new protagonist, and an extra semester of school.

Earlier this year, in a group of various announcements, Atlus revealed that the game, which was nominated for game of the year, would be re-released on various platforms.

Various platforms and hardware including PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5, would all receive a port.

Those who already own the PlayStation 4 version were hoping that they would get a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version upon release.

This would follow in the footsteps of popular games such as Horizon Forbidden West and Nioh 2 which allow players access to both PlayStation versions at no extra cost.

However, Atlus has confirmed via a Q&A section on its Japanese website that those wishing to upgrade will have to pay for the game at full price.

As translated by GLHF the question asks:

“Will those who own the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal be able to upgrade to the PS5 version?”

To which Atlus responded,

“We are terribly sorry, but those who own Persona 5 Royal on PS4 will not receive any bonuses.

“We hope that those who wish to play Persona 5 Royal on PS5, will purchase the PS5 version separately.”

Atlus have not confirmed whether there will be any improvements to the ports over the original PS4 version.

All ports of Persona 5 Royal will be available simultaneously on October 21, 2022.

The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from launch, for both consoles and PC.
