Locals Disgruntled as Lloyds Bank Closes Store in St. Neots

The closure of a Lloyds bank branch in St. Neots, Cambridge has left residents feeling like they are living in a ghost town. This move is part of the bank's strategy to shift away from traditional high street banking.

Residents Express Frustration at the Closure

Locals are expressing their frustration with the closure, as they now have to travel to Huntingdon or Biggleswade to do their banking. Many believe that high street banks have been slow to adapt to the digital age, which has contributed to the decline of town centers.

One resident said, "The town will be a ghost town soon, just memories of what was." Another added, "It's a shame to see high streets like St. Neots becoming ghost towns. Let's hope they can be revitalized."

Concerns About the Future of Local Banking

Residents are also questioning the future of banking in their area. With the closure of yet another branch, they wonder if there will be any banks left in their town.

Lloyds Banking Group Continues Branch Closure Strategy

Last month, Lloyds banking group announced the closure of 45 branches as part of its shift away from high street banking. The closures include 22 Halifax branches, 19 Lloyds branches, and four Bank of Scotland branches.

The bulk of the closures are scheduled for March and April next year, with additional closures in August and November. The decision to close branches is a response to the increasing preference for digital banking among customers.

Lloyds Bank Responds to the Closure

A spokesperson for Lloyds bank acknowledged the changing banking landscape, stating that more customers are choosing to do their banking online. They emphasized that there are still various ways for customers to bank with Lloyds, including online, mobile, phone, and Post Office services.

After the closure of the branch, a Community Banker will be available to provide support and guidance to customers in the area.

According to Lloyds, only 119 customers regularly used the St. Neots branch in the 12 months leading up to March 2023. Additionally, 79% of these customers also utilized other Lloyds banks, internet banking, or PhoneBank services.
