Thousands of Households Eligible for Free Cash

Starting from tomorrow, thousands of households in Dorset can apply for £150 free vouchers to spend at supermarkets. The help comes from the Household Support Fund (HSF), which is worth £842 million. The central pot of money has been distributed among councils in England, who will then distribute the vouchers to residents in need. The eligibility criteria vary depending on where you live, but generally, help is being offered to those on a low income or benefits such as Universal Credit.

How to Apply and Where to Spend

Dorset residents can apply for the £150 supermarket vouchers starting from tomorrow, December 5. The vouchers can be obtained through the Dorset Citizens Advice branch or the Dorset Council website. It's important to apply quickly as the vouchers will be allotted in windows and once they are all claimed, the application period will close. The vouchers can be spent at various supermarkets including Asda, Aldi, Tesco, and Waitrose.

Eligibility Criteria and Required Documents

To qualify for the vouchers, you must be living in Dorset and have an annual household net income of less than £30,000, savings of less than £16,000, and not have applied for help via the HSF in the last six months. Certain benefits, such as Personal Independence Payments and Child Benefit, are not included in the net income calculation. When applying, you will need to provide ID documents such as your birth certificate, driving licence, passport, and council tax bill.

Other Financial Help Available

In addition to the Household Support Fund, there are other forms of financial assistance available. Pensioners may be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, which is distributed between November 1 and the end of December. To qualify, you must have been born on or before September 25, 1957, and have lived in the UK for at least one day during the qualifying week of September 18 to 24, 2023. If you don't live in Dorset but are on benefits like Universal Credit or Income Support, you should contact your local council to see what assistance is available.
