Struggling to Stay Afloat

Ex-Masterchef finalist Tony Rodd has made the difficult decision to close his restaurant, Copper & Ink, in Blackheath, south east London. The closure comes as the monthly energy bill for the restaurant tripled, leaving Rodd and his wife Becky with no choice but to shut down.

A Terrifying Increase

Rodd had previously spoken out about the "terrifying" £80,000 energy bill that had put a strain on the restaurant. The couple had already faced financial challenges due to the pandemic and rising costs, which forced them to increase prices, leading to a decrease in customers. EDF Energy had nearly quadrupled the restaurant's monthly direct debit from £1,700 to £6,400, leaving Rodd unsure of how to sustain the business.

A Farewell to the Community

Announcing the closure on Twitter, the couple expressed their gratitude to the community for their support over the past five years. They acknowledged that there would be many questions and promised to answer as many as possible. However, they also requested privacy as they navigate the process of winding up the restaurant.

A Loss for Blackheath Village

Copper & Ink had become an integral part of the Blackheath Village community, and its closure will be felt deeply by the locals. The couple expressed their sadness at not being able to see their regular customers and bid farewell with hopes of meeting again in the future.

EDF Energy has been contacted for comment.
