A Hidden Treasure

An 81-year-old grandad is in for a surprise after discovering that some old Pokémon cards he nearly threw away could be worth £20,000 at auction. The cards, part of the Pokémon Fourth Print Base Set Booster Box, were purchased by the grandad in 1999 for just £100. Now, the unopened box of 102 Japanese trading cards is expected to fetch a hefty sum.

A Lucky Find

The grandad initially bought the cards as a spare set after collecting them with his four-year-old granddaughter. The box, still in its original cellophane wrapper, was stored in his cupboard for two decades before it was almost thrown out. Luckily, the family realized the potential value and decided to sell the box set, which has already made around £50,000 from other Pokémon cards sold.

A Bittersweet Story

The sale of the cards has been bittersweet for the family, as the grandmother sadly passed away from cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proceeds from the auction will go towards supporting the grandad's granddaughter, who is currently studying to become a paramedic at university.

A Piece of Pokémon History

The Pokémon Fourth Print Base Set Booster Box is unique because it was only released in the UK. The 102 cards inside, sealed in 36 booster packs, bear a date stamp from 1999-2000, making them a rare find for collectors. The box, still protected by its original cellophane wrap, features distinctive 'Wizards of the Coast' logos that were only found on Fourth Print boxes.

Overall, this discovery serves as a reminder that hidden treasures can be found in the most unexpected places.
