Five energy firms in the UK are providing up to £1,500 in free cash to assist households with their winter bills. This comes after the implementation of Ofgem's new price cap on October 1. If customers are still struggling to make payments, companies like British Gas and Octopus Energy are offering grants. Each firm has its own criteria, but typically individuals who are experiencing financial difficulty or arrears are eligible. Here's everything you need to know about these grants.

British Gas

The British Gas Energy Support Fund is now accepting applications from customers who are having trouble paying their bills. Any British Gas customer is eligible to apply and could receive up to £1,500. To qualify, you must live in England, Wales, or Scotland and have not received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust in the past year. You will also need to provide proof of income and information about your household expenses to determine if you are at risk of fuel poverty.

EDF

The EDF Customer Support Fund provides assistance to individuals in debt or facing financial difficulties. Customers must be part of the Priority Services Register and have an EDF account to apply. The amount of support granted depends on personal circumstances.

Scottish Power

Scottish Power offers grants worth up to £750 to customers in arrears who receive certain benefits. Applications can be made online, and a response is typically received within five working days.

Octopus Energy

Octopus Energy provides help worth up to £500 through its Assist Fund. Assistance varies depending on individual circumstances and needs. Customers may also qualify for a thermal imagery camera to identify heat leaks in their homes.

E.ON

Customers of E.ON or E.ON Next can apply for cash grants to cover energy bills. There are no established eligibility criteria, but priority is given to those with the greatest needs. Applications can be made on E.ON's website.

Other Energy Bill Help

If individuals can't get assistance through the above funds, there are other support options available. The Household Support Fund, worth £842 million, is available to those on a low income or benefits. Additionally, a cost of living payment is being made to individuals on certain benefits, and pensioners may receive a top-up to their Winter Fuel Payment.
