Obsession with Terracotta Dwellers Drives Family "Insane"

A great gran-of-five, Joan Buckingham, has won a whopping £111,000 on the Postcode Lottery and has big plans for her windfall – she's going to splash it on garden gnomes. Despite her family finding her obsession with the terracotta garden dwellers maddening, Joan couldn't care less. In fact, she's excited to add more pointy-hatted miniatures to her already impressive collection of 40 gnomes.

Unbelievable and Beautiful Win

Joan, who is 74 years old, expressed her disbelief and joy at winning the lottery, saying, "It's unbelievable and absolutely beautiful." She added, "I've never needed much. I just really enjoy collecting and painting ornaments for my garden."

A Lifelong Passion

Joan's obsession with gnomes began over a decade ago when she picked up her first figurine at a local garden centre. Since then, her collection has grown and grown. She even shares her passion with her great-grandchildren, who love painting the gnomes alongside her. Joan's grandson even bought her a three-foot-tall gnome.

Not Everyone Shares the Love

While Joan's family supports her passion, not all of them share her enthusiasm. Her daughter, Sam Buckingham, playfully jokes about her mother's obsession, saying, "I love her to bits, but she can drive me insane – everywhere we go it's 'oh have you seen that gnome over there?' 'Have we got enough room in the car? Can we get two?'

Sharing the Wealth

Joan plans to treat her family with her winnings and is even planning a holiday to the US with her two sisters and brother-in-law. She has lived in her house for 40 years and wants to create lasting memories with her loved ones. Additionally, Joan was one of eight neighbors on Shenley Lane in south east Birmingham who won a share of the £1,000,000 jackpot. Each winner received exactly £111,111.

Other winners, like supermarket worker Paula Kerman and her husband Michael, are also celebrating their newfound wealth. They plan to enjoy two weeks of autumn sun in Benidorm and toast their success with champagne on their way to the Costa Del Sol. The Kermans also plan to create a memorial garden bench in honor of their late parents and friends.
