IT’S the last weekend before Christmas – so surely time for a festive tipple or two.
After what has been a challenging 2020, it could be just what the doctor ordered.
Plus, seasonal sips need not cost the earth. Here’s how to save if you are ho-ho-hosting in your bubble . . .
Snow way: Snowball cocktails are a Christmas classic and really easy to make, with just two main ingredients — advocaat and lemonade.
Lidl is selling advocaat for just £5.49 per bottle, saving on Warninks Advocaat, £10 at Sainsbury’s. Mix equal parts of advocaat and lemonade. You can pick up a 2-litre Schweppes bottle for £1 at Asda. Add a squeeze of lime, to taste, and pour over ice.
SAVING: £4.51 on advocaat
Wine not: The season is not quite the same without mulled wine. But it can be a chore to make your own as you need to stock up on and then simmer red wine, a blend of spices, sugar and fruit to get that festive flavour.
Tesco is selling ready-blended bottles for £2.25, down from £3. This also saves you forking out on every ingredient. All you need to do is heat it up.
SAVING: at least 75p
Retro revival: Sipping on Babycham is sure to send you down memory lane. The refreshingly retro sparkling perry is currently £2.45 for a 75cl bottle at Iceland — a decent saving compared to £5.49 for a bottle of the same size from drinksupermarket.com.
SAVING: £3.04
Buck up your ideas: A celebratory tipple is always welcome on Christmas Day, and a glass of Buck’s fizz is sure to make cooking dinner seem less of a chore.
It is made by mixing two parts champagne to one part orange juice. Get Aldi’s highly rated Veuve Monsigny champagne brut, £12.99. It is a good saving on names such as Nicolas Feuillatte brut champagne, £20 at Tesco.
