Two Iconic Homebase Stores Shutting Down

Two Homebase stores, a popular destination for home improvement and gardening materials, are set to close today. These closures have left shoppers worried about missing out on Christmas decorations.

Long-Standing Chain Faces Challenges

Homebase, a beloved home improvement brand that has been serving customers since 1979, has recently fallen on hard times. The closures of one store in Plymouth and another in Oxford were initially scheduled for November but have now been finalized.

Traveling for the Nearest Store

Customers from Plymouth will now need to travel 30 miles east to reach the nearest Homebase store in Newton Abbot, while Banbury shoppers will have to go 14 miles to Bicester. This inconvenience has left many disappointed.

Uncertainty Surrounding Closure Reason

The exact reason for the store closures has not been disclosed by Homebase, leaving both employees and customers in the dark. The closure posters in the stores and on social media, however, advertise "All stock reduced" and "everything must go."

Sadness and Disappointment Among Shoppers

Shoppers, expressing their sadness and disappointment, took to Facebook to share their feelings about the closures. Many expressed their love for Homebase and their disappointment at losing it as a shopping option, particularly for Christmas decorations.

Continued Closures Across the UK

Homebase is not the only retailer facing store closures. The company is also set to close its shop at the O2 Centre on Finchley Road in London on December 10. This follows the closure of its Newport store in South Wales on September 8. In total, Homebase has closed 93 stores since its acquisition by Hilco Capital in 2018.

Transformation and Restructuring

Homebase, under new ownership, has been working to turn its fortunes around. After entering a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) agreement and restructuring its business, the retailer has returned to profitability. It has recently launched a massive gardening sale, offering discounts of up to 50% on selected items.

Challenges Faced by Retailers

Increasing energy costs and the rise of online shopping have posed challenges for retailers. Many have been forced to close stores as a cost-cutting measure. Boots, Oak Furnitureland, B&M, and Poundstretcher are among the retailers that have also faced store closures this year.

Homebase has not yet responded to requests for comment.
