Shoppers in Stroud, Gloucestershire, are devastated after the iconic shoe chain Clarks announced the closure of its store. This comes as a double blow for locals, as rival brand Shoe Zone is also due to close. With the closure of Clarks, residents will have to travel out of town to find their favorite shoes.

Locals React on Social Media

The news of the closure has sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Tony Davey, chair of the Stroud Chamber of Trade and Commerce, expressed his sadness, stating that the closure will leave a gap in the town. Many locals took to Facebook to voice their concerns about the decline of small towns and the rise of online shopping.

Andy said, "Something really needs to be done to help small towns like Stroud to survive. Struggling high streets continue to decline as online shopping gathers pace." Lauren added, "That’s a real shame. Everything is going online. Won’t be able to pop into town for anything but a coffee soon."

Shoppers Share their Memories

The closure of Clarks has also evoked nostalgia among residents. Carole reminisced, "Such a shame, Stroud is not the same, we have lost so many good and affordable shops." Eva, who has been a loyal customer, expressed her disappointment, saying, "Since Wilko’s closed, my trips to Stroud are reducing as I simply can’t get what I need in town."

Clarks Responds to Closure

A spokesperson for Clarks confirmed the closure of the Stroud store and expressed gratitude to the employees and customers. They assured customers that they can still shop online or visit nearby Clarks stores in Cheltenham and Cirencester.

Concerns About the Future

The closure of Clarks is not the only blow to the town. House of Fraser in Cavendish House, Cheltenham, has also announced its closure. Locals fear that the rapid closures of well-established stores will turn their town into a "ghost town."
