Omniplex Cinema Group, Ireland's largest cinema chain, has acquired five cinema locations in the UK after rival company Empire Cinema fell into administration. The sites, located in Birmingham, Ipswich, Sutton, High Wycombe, and Clydebank, Scotland, will be reopened under new ownership within days. Omniplex, which already operates 38 cinemas in Ireland, plans to make further announcements regarding cinema openings in 2024. The acquisition, worth £22.5 million, will also secure 150 existing jobs.

Expansion into the British Market

Omniplex Cinema Group's director, Paul John Anderson, expressed excitement about the company's expansion into the British market. Empire Cinemas, which went into administration in July, closed six sites immediately. However, seven of the 14 sites remained open, with five of them now being acquired by Omniplex. The fate of the Cheltenham and Bath sites is still uncertain.

Cineworld's Struggles and Your Rights in Redundancy

Empire Cinemas is not the only chain to face challenges in recent years. Cineworld, for example, filed for bankruptcy protection in the US last year due to significant debts and low footfall. If you are a worker affected by Empire Cinemas going into administration, it is important to know your rights in redundancy. You may be entitled to statutory redundancy pay, which is based on your age, weekly pay, and number of years in the job. The government provides a calculator on its website to help you determine the amount you are owed.
