Job Vacancies Without Degrees on the Rise

The number of job vacancies that do not require a university degree has increased dramatically in the past year, with a 90% rise in opportunities. Employers are now focusing on abilities and potential rather than formal education when making hiring decisions, allowing them to interview a significantly larger pool of candidates.

New Criteria for Hiring

Major companies like Kellogg's and IBM have joined the trend by removing the requirement for a university education in certain roles. Kellogg's, for example, recently conducted a successful trial of hiring sales staff without degrees, leading the company to extend this practice across the business. Chris Silcock, UK boss of Kellogg's, emphasized the importance of diverse backgrounds in the workplace, stating, "We hope more people from different backgrounds will consider Kellogg as somewhere for their career, not just those who went to university."

Skills Over Degrees

In today's job market, recruiters are five times more likely to search for specific skills rather than degrees, according to LinkedIn. More than three in four workers also agree that learning new skills, rather than simply gaining qualifications, is the key to career success. LinkedIn's UK managing director, Josh Graff, noted that businesses are increasingly recognizing that a degree is not the only indicator of talent.

As traditional hiring practices evolve, job seekers without degrees can now have a greater chance at securing rewarding employment opportunities.
