A popular Cineworld branch in Hengrove Leisure Park, South Bristol, is set to be demolished within weeks, leaving customers devastated. The closure of this much-loved cinema will also mark the end of cinemas in the area. The branch will be permanently closed on November 26th to make way for a new housing estate, approved by developers AEW. The demolition is part of a larger plan to build 350 new homes, replacing both the Cineworld multiplex and the adjacent bingo hall.

End of an era for film lovers

After years of serving movie-lovers in Bristol, Cineworld Bristol has made the difficult decision to shut down. The cinema will remain open until November 26th and will continue to screen a wide range of films. A spokesperson for Cineworld expressed gratitude towards their loyal customers for choosing Cineworld Bristol over the years.

Controversial decision for Bristol City Council

The closure of Cineworld Bristol was originally expected to take place in 2022 after AEW received planning permission in September 2021. Michael Shears from AEW spoke at a council meeting, emphasizing the redevelopment of an unused brownfield into a vibrant new neighborhood that promotes walking and cycling. While the application was approved by eight out of nine committee members, some argued that the loss of leisure facilities would negatively impact the new community. Cllr Sarah Classick acknowledged the need for housing but expressed concerns about the impact on the area's development. On the other hand, Cllr Paul Goggin supported the application, highlighting the inclusion of affordable housing.

Cinemas facing challenges

Cineworld's closure of the Bristol branch comes as the chain expects to emerge from bankruptcy protection in July. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US last year due to significant debts and revenue loss. Additionally, UK cinema chain Empire Cinemas has fallen into administration, resulting in the immediate closure of multiple sites. Meanwhile, Odeon, another major cinema chain, has been forced to shut down five of its cinemas permanently.

Cinemas affected:

  • Magdalen Street, Oxfordshire
  • Rigby Road, Blackpool
  • Weston-super-mare
  • Ayrshire
  • Banbury
