Spending the Money on Tribute

A married couple from Birmingham, Michael and Paula Kerman, won £111,000 in the People's Postcode Lottery. Instead of splurging on themselves, they have decided to use the money to buy a memorial bench to honor their deceased parents.

A Personal Touch

The Kermans plan to install the bench in their backyard and have it engraved with the names of both sets of parents, as well as friends who have passed away in the last three years, including those lost during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Life-Changing Win

Paula, a supermarket worker, expressed her amazement at how their lives have been transformed by the lottery win. She said, "It's amazing – £12 a month and it's changed our lives completely. We lost both of our parents and we've lost some good friends over the last three years. We want to engrave all their names on to the bench, so we have somewhere to sit and reflect."

Treating Themselves

In addition to the memorial bench, the couple plans to indulge themselves. They had previously booked a holiday to Benidorm and will now use their winnings to upgrade their accommodations. Michael mentioned that they can also afford a new kitchen, an extension to their home, and treats for their children.

Community Jackpot

Michael and Paula Kerman were not the only winners on their street. Eight other households in their West Midlands neighborhood shared similar amounts of the £1 million prize, thanks to their participation in a subscription syndicate.

Unusual Obsession

Another winner from the same street, Joan Buckingham, plans to spend her windfall on her unique passion for terracotta garden gnomes. The 74-year-old great-grandmother enjoys painting gnomes with her great-grandchildren, much to the dismay of her daughter.

About the People's Postcode Lottery

The People's Postcode Lottery, which has been running since 2005, awards £1 million each week to lucky winners based on their postcode. This time, the winning postcode was B29 5PM in Birmingham.

Other recent winners include a woman from Dearham in Cumbria and a grandmother-of-nine from Sheffield in South Yorkshire, both of whom have plans to treat their families with their winnings. There was also a fortunate couple who won despite moving away from the winning neighborhood in Plymouth, Devon.
