Social tariffs are underclaimed, but could save you big

MoneySavingExpert.com, founded by Martin Lewis, has warned Universal Credit recipients to check if they are eligible for social tariffs in order to potentially save hundreds of pounds on their broadband bills. These tariffs, designed for low income households and those on benefits, are often overlooked and not claimed.

Who qualifies for a social tariff?

The main criteria for qualifying for a social tariff is being a recipient of Universal Credit. However, many providers also allow those on other benefits, such as personal independence payments (PIP) and Attendance Allowance, to sign up. Ofcom, the regulatory body, has a comprehensive list of providers offering social tariffs on its website, along with eligibility criteria and application information.

Real-life savings

In an article on the MoneySavingExpert website, one reader shared how they managed to save over £300 a year on their broadband bill by switching to a social tariff. The reader, who is disabled and receives PIP, was first quoted £40 a month for a new deal with their existing provider. However, after learning about social tariffs, they found a deal with Vodafone for just £12 a month, saving them £28 a month and a total of £336 a year.

Do your research and compare

Before signing up for a social tariff, it's important to do your research and compare different providers. Ofcom's list provides information on speeds and prices offered by each provider. For example, while 4th Utility offers a social tariff for £14 a month with 30 Mbit/s speeds, Vodafone's Fibre 1 Essentials deal is £12 a month and offers faster speeds of 38 Mbit/s. By comparing options, you can ensure you're getting the best value for your money.

Check your eligibility

If you're not currently on Universal Credit or any other benefits, it may still be worth checking if you are eligible. Applying for benefits could not only make you eligible for a social tariff, but you will also receive the benefit itself. There are free benefit calculators available from charities like EntitledTo and Turn2Us that can help you determine if you are eligible.
