Furious fans of Fanta and Oasis have expressed their anger after McDonald’s made a major menu change by switching to sugar-free versions of the popular drinks. The fast food chain, which made the move in all its UK restaurants, said it was offering customers "more balanced choices". However, some customers took to Twitter to voice their outrage, with one classic Fanta fan saying, "How dare McDonald’s dictate what drinks I have or don’t." Another dissatisfied customer pleaded, "Please keep Oasis full sugar, this zero s**t is stealing my happiness."

Health Campaigners Welcome the Initiative

While many fans may be upset, health campaigners have applauded McDonald’s for the decision. Tam Fry, the chair of the National Obesity Forum, said that the removal of sugar from the drinks would lead to a healthier population. He added, "There will be a lot of people who won’t like this as they adore their sugary drinks, but the removal of sugar will make a great number of people healthier." The move is expected to result in 2,515 tons of sugar being removed from McDonald’s menu annually.

Comparing the Sugar Content

A medium portion of Fanta Orange contains 18g of sugar and 76 calories, while the zero sugar version has just 4 calories. Similarly, Oasis contains 17g of sugar and 67 calories, but the sugar-free Summer Fruits Zero has 2g of sugar and 12 calories. McDonald’s will still continue to sell Coca-Cola Classic, which contains 42g of sugar.

McDonald’s Stands by Its Decision

McDonald’s defended its choice, stating that it was part of the company's commitment to offering customers healthier options. The chain began transitioning from Fanta Orange and Oasis Summer Fruits to their sugar-free counterparts in September. However, Coca-Cola Classic and Irn-Bru (Scotland only) will still be available to customers. McDonald’s assured customers that signage would be displayed in restaurants during the transition.
