Historic Discovery

A rare gold coin dating back nearly 700 years has sold for a staggering amount after being found in a field drain in Norfolk in 1910. The artefact dates to the reign of King Edward III and depicts the Battle of Sluys in 1340.

Medieval Treasure

The 14th-century coin, struck following the Treaty of Bretigny in 1361, fetched £9,500 at a recent auction in London. Featuring Edward III on a warship with a sword and shield, the coin represents a victorious moment in the Hundred Years War against the French.

Remarkable Journey

The coin, originally overlooked by the British Museum, was privately acquired in 1970 and recently resurfaced for auction. Auctioneer Gregory Edmund described the coin's history as romantic, having been hidden in a field drain for centuries before being discovered.

Modern-day Treasure Hunting

In a similar stroke of luck, treasure hunter Mickey Richardson used a metal detector won in a raffle to uncover a £23,000 hoard of silver coins buried in a field since the Civil War era. The coins, sold at Spink & Son auctioneers in London, fetched £18,500, with Mickey planning to share the proceeds for a holiday with his wife.
