Difficult Decision

Tesco, the popular supermarket chain, has announced the closure of its stores in Chippenham and Armthorpe after 15 years of operation. The closure comes as a difficult decision for the company.

Chippenham Closure

The Chippenham store, which has been a staple of the Emery Gate shopping centre since 2008, will be permanently closed. Tesco has secured a new, smaller premises on the High Street and will open as Tesco Chippenham High Street Express.

Armthorpe Closure

Tesco Group is also closing its store on Mill Street in Armthorpe, Doncaster. Local shoppers will have until Sunday, January 27, 2024, to visit the store before it shuts down. The nearest Tesco Express branch after the closure will be in Wheatley Hills, Doncaster.

New Store Opening

Despite the closures, a new store will be opening next month. The Tesco store in Armthorpe will become a One Stop, which is owned by Tesco Group. The new store aims to provide customers with a wide range of quality products and services.

Closure Trend

Tesco's closure of these stores is part of a larger trend of major shops and chains closing branches. Argos, Next, Jack Wills, and Poundland are among the retailers closing selected branches. The closures are attributed to factors such as high business rates, the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, rising energy costs, and the growing preference for online shopping.

Struggles in the Retail Industry

The retail industry has seen the closure of thousands of outlets since 2018, with retailers facing budget constraints and the need to cut costs. Even charity shops, like Oxfam, have been affected and had to close some of their UK stores.

Overall, the closure of these Tesco stores highlights the challenges faced by retailers in today's digital world and the changing consumer preferences.
