Tesco's Decision Due to Lack of Customer Demand
Tesco, the supermarket giant, is set to close two of its stores in Wakefield and Sheffield today. Both stores were previously converted from the discount brand Jack's to Tesco in 2022. The decision to shut down the sites was made due to a lack of customer demand.
Shoppers Express Disappointment on Social Media
As news of the store closures broke, shoppers took to social media to express their disappointment. One Facebook user said, "Such a shame. I liked shopping at Tesco. Staff were so helpful and friendly." Meanwhile, another shopper wrote, "Another one bites the dust!"
Staff Given Option to be Redeployed
All staff currently working at the two stores will have the option to be redeployed to another store in the area. Tesco also has Tesco Express stores available in the surrounding area.
Remaining Jack's Stores Converted to Tesco Supermarkets
Four former Jack's stores have been successfully converted to Tesco supermarkets and remain open. These locations include Edgehill, Chatteris, Rubery, and Immingham.
Tesco's Experience with Jack's
In 2018, Tesco launched the discount store Jack's to compete with retailers like Lidl and Aldi. Although Tesco closed all Jack's stores last year, the retailer said it "learned a tremendous amount" from the business, which was named after founder Jack Cohen. This experience has helped Tesco be more competitive with rival chains.
Store Closures Affecting UK Shoppers
Other retailers are also facing store closures due to challenges such as soaring inflation, high energy costs, and the shift to online shopping. Wilko announced that all its stores will close by October, resulting in over 1,000 redundancies. Iceland has closed over a dozen shops this year, with two supermarkets set to close soon. Farmfoods has also closed several stores this year, including one in Huddersfield.
