Unpopular jobs offer high salaries without requiring a degree
Some of the most unpopular jobs in the UK come with a fat salary each month and you don’t need a degree either. Less interest for the roles means job searchers are likely to have more success because there are fewer rivals for each opening. Many of the most unpopular jobs pay more than the average advertised salary of £37,697, data from career search engine Adzuna showed. The site looked at more than one million vacancies to find which openings had the lowest interest from job hunters and found 20 don't require a degree. Many of the roles could be great options for workers in similar industries or looking for a career change, according to Adzuna.
Tax specialist tops the list with a £55k salary
And top of the list is a tax specialist where workers can earn a tidy £55,000. As the name suggests, you will need some training to work in the role, but you can start as an apprentice – and going to university isn’t a requirement. Tax is an area that puts many off but workers who get their head around the numbers could find it’s more interesting than many assume.
Apprenticeships in audit, buildings and quantity surveying
The apprenticeship route is also one way to become an audit specialist who can earn a salary that tops £44,000. Or you earn around £50,000 working as either a buildings or quantity surveyor – both jobs are open to learning on job through apprentice schemes.
Lettings managers and sales negotiators
You can also expect to earn at least £33,000 as a lettings manager or sales negotiator and no formal qualifications are required to apply for these roles.
Hands-on jobs as a gas or air conditioning engineer
If you prefer the sound of a hands-on job, training on the job can kickstart a career as a gas or air conditioning engineer.
Opportunities for job seekers
Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, says: "Jobseekers are placing more priority on culture, values and work-life balance. Even if a job offers a tempting pay cheque, if it doesn’t provide a sustainable working environment, flexibility and room to grow, jobseekers are looking elsewhere. This has led to worsening skills shortages in areas like property jobs, healthcare and nursing, and education and childcare. But it also creates an opportunity for job seekers. These are also the jobs with the lowest competition for roles, meaning they could be great options for those looking for fast career progression, strong salaries, and increased job security."
