New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed the highest and lowest paying jobs in the UK for 2023. Surprisingly, you don't always need a degree to earn a high salary. Let's take a closer look at the results.

Highest paying jobs

The top spot for highest paid full-time earners goes to chief executives and senior officials, with an average salary of £113,577. Following closely behind are directors working in IT, earning an average of £91,810. Marketing, sales, and advertising directors round out the top three, with an average salary of £87,050.

Lowest paying jobs

On the other end of the scale, bar staff take the title for the lowest paid job, earning an average of £7,928 per year. Care escorts, who assist elderly or disabled people with appointments, come in second with an average salary of £9,397. Elementary services occupations, such as ticket collectors and hotel guest assistants, follow closely behind, earning £9,707 on average.

Starting from the bottom

While many high paying jobs require specialist qualifications, there are some roles where you can start at the bottom and work your way up. Take the boss of M&S, for example, who began as a shelf stacker earning £3.80 per hour. He never attended university but worked his way up to earn an impressive £800,000 per year.

Minimum wage rates

It's important to note that the National Living Wage is the minimum wage for those over 23 and will be increased to £11.44 per hour next April. Workers aged 21-22 must earn at least £10.18 per hour, while 18 to 20-year-olds have a minimum wage of £7.49 per hour.

Overall, the data from the ONS highlights the highest and lowest paying jobs in the UK for 2023. While some roles require specific qualifications, there are opportunities to start at the bottom and work your way up. So, is your job on the list?
