Thousands of families in South Wales are set to receive a one-off payment of £125 to help with the rising cost of living. Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council will distribute over £4 million to eligible recipients, including families with school-age children. The payment will also extend to households with children who are schooled at home or attend school outside the area.

Support for Council Workers

In addition to the cost of living payments, RCT Council will provide support to lower-paid council employees. Approximately 6,000 workers in grades one to six will receive a supplement payment of £125, which will be added to their salary.

Support for Winter Months

RCT Council will allocate funds to support communities during the upcoming winter months. This support includes £80,000 for winter welcome centers and hubs, providing warm pack items, hot drinks, and snacks. An additional £30,000 will be allocated for food support in venues serving hot meals.

As the winter approaches, Councillor Andrew Morgan, leader of the council, expressed hope that the Welsh or UK Government will provide further assistance, as this time of year can be "extremely difficult for families, individuals, and organizations".

UK Government Cost-of-Living Payments

The UK government recently announced that it will distribute its next cost-of-living payment to households on benefits between October 31 and November 19. Households on tax credits only will receive their payment from HMRC between November 10 and November 19. The support also includes an additional payment of £299 in spring 2024, with the exact date yet to be confirmed.

The following benefits qualify individuals for the payments:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Pension Credit

If eligible recipients were receiving any of the above benefits between January 26 and February 25 this year, they received the first £301 payment. The second payment is also given to those eligible between August 18 and September 17. If individuals were later found to be entitled to any of the listed benefits between these qualifying dates, they are still eligible for the payment. These payments will not affect the amount received through benefits or contribute to the benefit cap.
