Two friends have come up with a clever solution to combat the rising cost of living crisis in the UK. Josh Pieters and Archie Manners decided to fly to Poland for their weekly food shop at Lidl, and ended up saving nearly £70 on everyday groceries. Despite the cost of flights and accommodation, they still managed to spend £11 less than they would have at a Lidl store in Britain.

Flying to Poland for Savings

Josh and Archie, both 30, documented their money-saving adventure on their YouTube channel, which has over 1.5 million subscribers. They purchased 135 items, including bread, peanut butter, and frozen chicken nuggets, which are used to calculate food inflation. At a Lidl store in the UK, their total cost came to £164.47. However, at a store in Poznan, Poland, they only paid £96.75 for the same goods, resulting in a significant saving of £67.72.

Highlighting the Cost of Living Crisis

The inspiration for this unconventional shopping trip came from the friends' realization of how expensive everything has become in the UK. Josh, who lives in London, mentioned paying £4 for a coffee, which he found shocking. They wanted to demonstrate the absurdity of the situation and decided to take advantage of cheap flights within Europe. Although they acknowledge that their experiment doesn't solve the cost of living crisis, they believe it's a creative way to shed light on the issue.

Proving a Point

Former Tory party activist Archie, who is also a magician, expressed that while their method may seem extreme, it serves to prove their point. They noticed that certain items, like olive oil, are more expensive in the UK compared to petrol. As a result, Archie continues to use the bottle they brought back from Poland. The latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that food prices in the UK have risen by 12.2% in the year to September, down from a record high of 19% in March.
