Government Support Fund
Hard-up families in the UK have been given a boost with free slow cookers and one-off payments to help with the cost of living. The support is part of the latest round of the Household Support Fund, worth £842 million, distributed by the Department of Work and Pensions.
Swindon Borough Council's Initiative
Swindon Borough Council has taken action by distributing 426 slow cookers, 85 health grills, and 24 kettles to struggling families. According to a council spokesperson, the items were purchased using a portion of the Household Support Fund to help households with the cost of food, energy, and other essentials. In addition, 83 residents have received a payment of £13,100 to assist with essentials.
Emergency Assistance Fund
More than 180 residents have been granted a one-off payment from the Emergency Assistance Fund, with £17,520 already distributed. The cash comes as part of The Household Support Fund, aimed at supporting those in need.
Covering Essential Costs
The grants provided by the Household Support Fund assist with covering the costs of food, energy, and other essentials. Eligible residents can receive payments based on their individual circumstances. The amount varies depending on location, so it's important to check with your local council for specific details.
How to Apply
Residents can apply for support by filling out an online form on their local council's website. Paper copies may also be available at local libraries. Important documents such as a National Insurance number, recent bank statement, and information on benefits received will be required. Contact your local council directly for any specific queries or to request support while filling out the form.
Act Quickly
Applications for the Household Support Fund are typically accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so it's important to apply as soon as possible. Each household is eligible to apply once every six months. Some councils also offer shopping vouchers as an alternative to cash.
Other Support Options
If you don't qualify for the Household Support Fund, there are other avenues to explore. Energy providers such as British Gas, E.On, and EDF offer grants worth up to £1,500. Additionally, the Warm Home Discount provides a one-off payment of £150 towards energy bills for eligible households. Beyond March 31, further assistance with energy bills is available, including the £301 cost of living payment.
