Cost Concerns

As temperatures drop in the UK, households are worried about the cost of heating their homes. However, one woman has found a solution to lower her energy bills by hundreds of pounds a year. Thanks to a government grant, Susan Holt was able to install a heat pump and receive £5,000 for free to cover the costs.

The Grant Increase

The government grant, which was recently increased to £7,500 by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, will be available from October 23. Susan and her husband, Philip, were pleased to discover this scheme after moving to a rural location. By switching to a heat pump, they reduced their energy bills by around £300 per year.

A Greener and Cheaper Alternative

The couple decided to replace their old oil-based heating boiler with an air source heat pump as part of major renovations. Susan mentioned that their existing boiler was on its last legs, so they wanted a more efficient and cost-effective system. They applied for the government grant and used it towards the installation of their new heat pump.

Benefits and Considerations

Heat pumps are a greener alternative to traditional boilers and provide a cheaper way to heat homes. Susan and Philip are pleased with the reduced carbon footprint of their cottage since installing the heat pump. However, they note that space and noise can be factors to consider. Additionally, the cost of installation can be higher if new radiators or pipework are required.

A Step Worth Taking

Despite the costs involved, Susan believes that installing a heat pump is a step worth taking. She encourages others to do the same, especially now that the government grants have been increased to £7,500. She emphasizes that the initial investment can soon be recouped through savings on energy bills.

Applying for the Grant

To be eligible for the grant, homeowners must have their own property with an installation capacity of up to 45kWh and a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). They also need to find an MCS-certified installer to claim the grant on their behalf. The scheme is expected to cover 90,000 installations and is set to run until March 2025.

Other Energy Efficiency Schemes

In addition to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the government has introduced other schemes to improve energy efficiency. The Great British Insulation Scheme aims to improve the energy efficiency of more than 300,000 homes, while the Warm Home Discount scheme provides energy credit to help with winter bills. Councils also offer the Household Support Fund to assist households in need.
