900 Post Offices Opt Out of New Lottery Operator

Around 900 Post Offices in the UK, which make up a fifth of the network, will no longer sell lottery tickets and scratchcards. The decision comes after the Post Office ended its group National Lottery contract last year. Instead, branch managers were given the choice to sign up individually with new operator Allwyn.

Religious Beliefs and Low Sales Cited as Reasons for Opting Out

Allwyn, the Czech firm that took over from Camelot this month, stated that most postmasters who did not sign up did so due to religious beliefs or low sales. However, the National Federation of SubPostmasters argued that many were deterred by the high costs of purchasing scratchcards. Chief executive Calum Greenhow expressed concerns about potential financial losses.

Allwyn's Promise to Review Lottery Ticket Prices

Allwyn had previously pledged to decrease the price of lottery tickets from £2 to £1, but the company announced that this promise is currently under review.
