A Festive Thank You

Majestic, a major wine retailer in the UK, is showing appreciation to its "incredible" staff by closing its more than 200 stores for an extra day over the festive period. All 1,600 colleagues will receive January 2 off in addition to Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Putting Employees First

This is the second time in the past three years that Majestic has closed all its shops on January 2, allowing employees to spend more time with family and friends during the Christmas break. John Colley, Majestic's CEO, expressed gratitude to the hardworking staff and stated that rewarding them with these days off is the right thing to do to ensure they return to work fully refreshed in the New Year.

Focus on Staff Health and Well-being

This announcement aligns with Majestic's ongoing commitment to staff health and well-being. The company recently won the 'Happiest Place to Work' category at the Retail Week Awards 2024. In addition, all store colleagues received a pay increase earlier this year, and Majestic funded wine, spirit, and sake qualifications for 550 colleagues.

Following the Lead

Majestic is the first retailer to confirm that it will be closing its doors on January 2. However, other companies, including Aldi, Home Bargains, Iceland, Lidl, and Poundland, are also giving their staff time off on Boxing Day and/or New Year's Day. John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose will shut all stores on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and Marks and Spencer will close 400 stores on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
