LABOUR has hired a West End actor to gather showbiz support for Sir Keir Starmer.

Paul Hilliar – who starred in The Mousetrap – is the party’s new “celebrity and endorsements manager”.

The Tories branded the role a desperate move to distract from the problem Labour has “no actual policies”.

Ahead of next year’s likely general election Mr Hilliar’s job will be to rally as many famous faces as possible to publicly back Sir Keir’s PM bid and even get them knocking on doors.

The drama school graduate recently starred as Detective Sergeant Trotter in Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap at St Martin’s Theatre.

Self-styled “communications specialist” Mr Hilliar joined Labour’s payroll in recent days following a string of PR jobs.

Rod Steward recently declared he was ditching the Tories and would be voting Labour.

But it is not clear how much celebrity endorsements help, with Hillary Clinton famously crashing to defeat despite Beyoncé and Jay Z’s endorsement.

Conservative deputy chairman Lee Anderson told the Sun: “It would appear that Sir Keir is now recruiting his celebrity luvvies to campaign for the next general election.

“The only problem with this is Labour have no actual policies. Therefore these actors will have to get better at ad-libbing over the next 18 months as there is no script.”

Labour is on a hiring spree ahead of the election campaign, with party staff being told this week they had poached top Treasury mandarin Nick Williams as their new economy boffin.

It follows the blazing row over appointing Partygate investigator Sue Gray as Sir Keir’s chief of staff.
