Missed Opportunity for Apology

Lee Anderson would have retained his Tory MP position had he apologized for his controversial remarks, according to the deputy PM.

However, Oliver Dowden declined to confirm whether he believed Anderson's comments were Islamophobic.

Condemnation Across the Board

The Ashfield MP faced backlash and was stripped of the party whip after suggesting that London Mayor Sadiq Khan was influenced by "Islamists."

His comments drew criticism from various political figures, with former Justice Secretary Robert Buckland labeling the remarks as racist and repugnant.

Prime Minister's Action

When questioned, Mr. Dowden emphasized the importance of words and stated that Anderson's failure to apologize led to his removal from the party.

While Dowden believed Anderson did not intend to be Islamophobic, he acknowledged the offense caused by the words used.

Speculation and Downplayed Rumors

Following the incident, rumors circulated that Anderson might join the Reform Party, but its leader Richard Tice downplayed the speculations, stating there had been no defection talks.
