Former Olympic rower James Cracknell has announced his bid to become a Tory MP in the upcoming general election. The double gold medallist emerged victorious among five other candidates and will represent the Conservative Party in Colchester, Essex.

Replacing Outgoing MP Will Quince

James Cracknell aims to fill the seat left vacant by outgoing MP Will Quince, who is stepping away from politics to prioritize his family. Cracknell has long been considered a potential candidate in Westminster, previously attempting to stand in Henley.

A Stellar Olympic Career

The 51-year-old rower achieved Olympic gold in both 2000 and 2004 as a member of Great Britain's coxless four crew. After retiring from rowing in 2006, Cracknell embarked on a unique mission, running, cycling, and swimming across the United States in a TV series. During a cycling segment, he suffered a severe skull fracture in a freak accident, narrowly escaping tragedy thanks to his bike helmet.

A New Chapter in Personal Life

Cracknell's personal life has undergone changes as well. He married TV presenter Beverly Turner in 2002, divorcing in 2019 during his participation in Strictly Come Dancing. In 2021, he married financier Jordan Connell.

Expectations for a Strong Campaign

Paul Dundas, the Conservative group leader in Colchester, expressed confidence in Cracknell's candidacy, stating, "James was the clear choice of members. I think he will be a fantastic candidate and a great MP for Colchester. He will win because he is a guy who doesn't do losing."
