Emmerdale's Laura Norton and Mark Jordan, who played Kerry Wyatt and Daz Spencer on the soap, are using their platform to raise awareness about their children's rare genetic disorder, Usher syndrome. They are currently filming a documentary for Channel 4, sharing their journey and hoping to find a cure for the condition.
Raising Awareness
Laura and Mark are parents to two children, Jesse and Ronnie. Usher syndrome affects both hearing and vision in young children, requiring them to wear hearing aids throughout their lives and potentially face the loss of their sight.
The couple initially kept the diagnosis a secret but have now decided to speak out and help others who are going through the same situation. They have welcomed cameras into their lives to document their journey and share their experiences.
Passion for the Cause
Laura and Mark are passionate about raising awareness and finding a cure for Usher syndrome. They recently organized a charity ball to raise funds for research. The event was attended by celebrity friends including Amy Walsh, Samantha Giles, and Tina O'Brien.
An insider shared, "Laura and Mark are really passionate about getting the word out and helping others who have children in the same situation. It was a real shock for them when they found out but they really have taken everything in their stride and are doing some amazing work."
The Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Laura and Mark both carry the gene that causes Usher syndrome. They discovered that their children would eventually lose their sight due to the condition. Laura said, "Knowing that we'd passed this on to our son was heartbreaking. To watch our little boy enjoy the world around him yet know so much will be taken from him, was painful."
Raising Hope for the Future
Usher syndrome comes in three types, with varying degrees of severity and progression. Currently, there is no cure for the condition. Laura and Mark's documentary aims to raise hope for finding a cure and provide support for families affected by Usher syndrome. Their determination to help others facing similar challenges is truly inspiring.
