Pressure Mounts on Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, is facing mounting pressure from senior Tories to accelerate the construction of new houses in order to regain the support of younger voters. This comes after the Labour Party pledged to build 1.5 million new homes within five years if they come into power.

Proposals Launched by Policy Exchange Think-Tank

The Policy Exchange think-tank has put forward fourteen new proposals, including the reformation of planning laws, to stimulate the economy and reduce crime. The think-tank's report has received support from former Cabinet Minister Sir Brandon Lewis, who believes that these plans will significantly expedite the delivery of much-needed housing and infrastructure.

Housing as a Key Election Issue

Housing is expected to be a major battleground in the next election. The government scaled back its plans to build 300,000 new homes annually after facing pressure from backbench MPs. However, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has made housing a central theme in his conference speech, expressing his support for new homes being built in local areas and advocating for the removal of planning restrictions.

Reforming Planning Rules for Grid Infrastructure

Sir Simon Clarke has also voiced his support for proposals to reform the planning rules for electricity networks, aiming to expedite the construction of grid infrastructure.

Shifting Energy Price Cap Model

Number 10 has been urged to consider shifting from the current energy price cap model to a more targeted cap that specifically protects the most vulnerable customers.

Parents' Right to Know

Tory MP Miriam Cates is calling for parents to have an "absolute right" to be informed about what their children are being taught in schools. She argues that parents should be able to seek a court order to prevent schools from teaching "age-inappropriate or politicized materials."

Minimum Prison Terms for Shoplifters and Burglars

The report also suggests implementing new minimum prison terms for prolific shoplifters and burglars as a means of deterring crime and making a direct impact on reducing criminal activity.
