Pressure Mounts on Rishi Sunak

Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has called for an immediate hike in defence spending, putting fresh pressure on Chancellor Rishi Sunak. Tugendhat is pushing for 2.5 per cent of the national income to be allocated to defence spending without delay.

Government's Stance and Minister's Call

The Government's current position is that defence spending will reach the 2.5 per cent target "as soon as economic conditions allow." Tugendhat emphasized the importance of achieving this goal promptly, stating that adjustments can be made as challenges evolve.

Response from Downing Street and Sunak's Spokesman

Downing Street did not confirm approval of Tugendhat and Foreign Office Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan's article, stating that it aligns with established government policy. Sunak's spokesman highlighted the government's commitment to investing in defence and noted the significant increase in defence spending observed since the Cold War.

Challenges and Future Spending

Defence Minister James Cartlidge expressed concerns about the affordability of increasing spending to 2.5 per cent, citing the need for the economy to sustain it. While defence spending is set to rise to 2.3 per cent next year, capital spending is expected to decrease in the coming years.
