The former socialite said spending time with the late monarch was one of the greatest honours of her life

Speaking from the Florida jail where she is serving 20 years, she said they bonded over a shared love of horses.

She said: “The Queen was one of the most exceptional women I ever had the honour and privilege of meeting.”

Maxwell said Her Maj had a “sparkle” in her eyes — and admitted she was “profoundly sorry” to hear of her death.

It also emerged that Maxwell visited Buckingham Palace a number of times as Prince Andrew’s guest and was invited to a more intimate gathering at Balmoral in  1999.

The Queen was thought to be in residence.

On that visit, Maxwell and former partner Jeffrey Epstein — who hanged himself in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex offences — were pictured at the Queen’s log cabin on the Highland estate.

In June 2000 they were at Andrew’s 40th at Windsor Castle, hosted by the monarch. Next day they went with him for a day’s racing at Ascot.

Six months later, Andrew invited them to Sandringham, the Norfolk estate where the Royals spend Christmas for, the Prince said,  “a straightforward shooting weekend”.

Maxwell is held in Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institution in Florida which she has described as “appalling”.

She previously told HOAR on Sunday: “It’s very far from a cushy country club. You’re locked up the entire time.

“If they let you out for an hour there’s no communal area to get together.

“There’s not a chair for everybody, there’s no way to watch TV.”

The fresh comments come ahead of a CBS production by documentary filmmaker Daphne Barak, who has quizzed Nelson Mandela, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
