Determined to help his twin sister Gemma Winter in her financial troubles, Paul seriously indebted himself, prompting his partner Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to pay off his loan.
But Paul feels guilty next week as he knows he won’t be able to pay his other half back.
In later scenes, Paul reads about Rufus Donahue’s death in the Gazette.
Regular ITV viewers will remember that the businessman played by Steven Meo was brutally murdered by Stephen Reid – but his death changes a lot of things for Paul.
In an attempt to make money fast, as he’s been recently told he could be suffering from motor neurone disease (MND) and have under three years to live, Paul has been in cahoots with local criminal Damon Hay (Ciarán Griffiths).
Following Rufus’ death, Damon orders Paul to dispose of the businessman’s car.
Paul sets off in the vehicle with the intent of disposing of it but his clumsy left hand makes him swerve across the road and a police car soon approaches him.
While the outcome of this encounter remains to be seen, it’s clear Paul is in no way exempt of legal trouble, just as his health could be in jeopardy.
Later on, solicitor Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) lets him know the police are reviewing the CCTV footage and accompanies him, as his friend, to his appointment with the MND specialist.
The latter was asked to take a look at Paul to make an official diagnosis – and he has devastating news.
Paul and Dee-Dee reel in shock when it’s confirmed Paul has motor neurone disease.
Faced with the diagnosis, Paul knows he doesn’t have any other choice but to tell Billy and the rest of his family.
But will he go through with it?
