XBOX boss, Phil Spencer, may have leaked a new device on Twitter.
Despite the recent demise of Google Stadia, many in the games industry are still determined to make cloud gaming the future.
A photo in the Xbox boss’ tweet may have revealed something too soon.
Xbox hasn’t shied away from this potential future, as their XCloud service already lets you stream several games straight to your device.
Streaming games, much like streaming movies or TV shows, lets you play a game on your device over the internet, rather than having to download anything.
As games grow exponentially bigger, it’s something games companies are leaning toward as a potential solution to save gamers from having to buy huge hard drives.
Rumours emerged in May that Xbox may be releasing a device similar to Stadia that exclusively hosts cloud games, but very little is known about it.
However, that all changed on Monday, as we may have gotten a look at a prototype of the device.
Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, tweeted a picture of a set of shelves in his office with the iconic Vault Boy from Fallout on it, to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary.
However, in the centre of the topmost shelf, fans spotted something suspicious. There was what looked like a very small Xbox console.
Speculation immediately ran rampant, with the consensus being that this could be an early version or prototype of the aforementioned cloud gaming device.
Spencer hasn’t said anything in response to the speculation, but the official Xbox Twitter account did leave a cheeky reply to their boss.
They tweeted: “Now what did we say about putting old prototypes on your shelf boss”.
Whether this is simply an attempt at damage control or deliberate social media marketing is unclear.
Even if the model is an old prototype, it tells us a lot about the future of a potential Xbox cloud console.
After all, if the boss is proud enough of it to put it on his shelf, then surely newer prototypes exist, perhaps even one close to being revealed.
The rumours from May suggested that the console would be available within 12 months, so it shouldn’t be too long before we find out the truth.
