B&M, the popular discount retailer, has announced the opening of six new branches following a series of closures. The company is relocating some of its existing stores to larger locations and expanding into new towns and cities.

New Openings and Relocations

B&M has already opened a new store in Irvine, Scotland, on August 12. The upcoming openings and relocations are as follows:

  • Southport – August 16
  • Glasgow – August 26 (relaunch)
  • Reading – August 28 (relocation)
  • Switch Island, Liverpool – September 9 (relaunch)
  • Eastbourne – September 14
  • Stockton – September 14
  • Leven Garden Centre – September 20 (garden centre only)
  • Hinckley – September 23
  • Wigan – September 29
  • Newbury – October 7
  • Gateshead – October 28 (relaunch)

B&M is not the only discount retailer expanding its number of stores. Poundland plans to open 15 new stores across the UK, TK Maxx is reportedly seeking new locations for expansion, and Poundstretcher aims to bring 50 new shops to the high street before the end of the year.

However, the high street isn't all positive news. Bargain retailer Wilko recently went into administration, putting 400 stores and 12,500 jobs at risk. Interested buyers have until today's "close of business" to submit rescue offers to administrators at PwC. The majority of Wilko's stores are situated on the high street, which may make them less appealing due to lower consumer spending and higher rental costs compared to out-of-town locations favored by competitors like B&M and Home Bargains.
