Locals, frustrated by the decaying state of the property known as White Wings, claim that it is negatively impacting the value of their homes. Pictures show the bungalow, which has been empty for 30 years, covered in weeds, nettles, and brambles.

Fearing for their Children's Safety

Michelle Houghman, who has lived next door to the abandoned house for nine years, expressed her fear for her grandchildren's well-being. The rats that reside in the property often come through the fence into her garden, forcing her to keep the children away from their usual play area. Even their cat refuses to venture outside due to the mysterious presence within the house.

A Potential £50,000 Price Drop

A local estate agent estimates that the decrepit condition of White Wings could reduce property prices in the area by a significant five percent, equivalent to about £50,000. This news has left homeowners in the neighborhood even more frustrated.

Abandoned House Sparks Discontent

Neighbours have expressed their disappointment and frustration at the neglected state of the property, with some even recalling the vandalism it experienced in 2001 when all the windows were smashed. Many in the area believe that the house could be a welcoming home for a family with children, if only it were in better condition.

Rats in the Garden

Bernard Watkins, who has lived nearby for many years, described the abandoned house as the most repulsive sight he has ever seen. He revealed that rats have infested his garden due to the derelict property. Watkins has contacted the council, suggesting a compulsory purchase order to address the issue, but was told that the process would be too slow and time-consuming.

Council Taking Action

Canterbury City Council confirmed that they are aware of the problems with the property and are actively engaged with the owner. Steps have been taken to minimize the impact of the house on the neighborhood, including removing dangerous elements such as a deteriorating garden wall and renewing guttering and roof structures. The council is also advocating for the use of the Long Term Empty Premium charge to encourage the owner to restore and utilize the property. However, they acknowledge that resolving these types of issues can be challenging and time-consuming.

The Long Term Empty Premium charge is an additional amount of council tax imposed on properties that have been vacant for two years or more. Homes that have been empty and substantially unfurnished for a decade or longer face a premium of 300%.
