This week marks the final days of trading for 74 Wilko stores as the iconic name prepares to disappear from the UK high street after 93 years. The retailer, which collapsed into administration in August, will see a total of 400 shops close permanently.

Shutters Coming Down

Throughout September, stores have been gradually closing their doors, with all branches set to shut by early October, according to administrators PwC. However, this week sees the closure of an additional 74 stores, with 37 shutting on Wednesday and another 37 on Thursday.

A Painful Loss for Communities

News of the closures has left many residents devastated, as Wilko stores have been serving communities for decades. Shoppers express their sadness, with comments such as, "Gutted…not just for me but for the town" and "So sad how empty the shelves are."

Wilko's Vanishing Act

Since September 12, over 200 Wilko stores have already closed permanently. The remaining 111 stores will close in early October. However, Poundland and B&M have purchased some of the stores, hinting at possible reopenings in the near future. The Range has acquired the Wilko brand, including its name and website, in a £5million deal. A message on the Wilko website assures customers that home delivery will be "returning soon".

Struggles on the High Street

Wilko is one of several retailers facing difficult times, with Iceland, Boots, and Paperchase also closing stores across the UK. The high street has been hit hard as consumers increasingly shift towards online retail. Rising energy and wage costs have further burdened businesses, resulting in store closures and some companies going bust altogether.

A Glimmer of Hope

Amidst the challenges, some retailers have managed to expand. Poundland, Primark, and B&M have all announced new store openings, while bakery chains are also set to expand. Dunkin' Donuts, for example, plans to open 30 new branches by 2025. Wenzel's the Bakers has already begun opening nine new locations across the UK.
